The Bailey’s are coming out
of “winter hibernation” and are getting ready for spring and for the berry
season. I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year
and that you are ready for 2008.
Pearce has the berry patch
all trimmed up and really looking nice. He has worked very hard replacing all
of the plants that didn’t survive last summer’s rains. The buds on all of the
blueberries, blackberries and fruit trees are beginning to swell and everything
should be blooming in another couple of weeks.
The cherry trees didn’t like all of the water that they stood in during June,
2007 and we replaced them with pomegranates. That should be a wonderful fruit
to add to our large assortment of fruit trees.
We expect to open one day
during the last week of May or the first week of June. We won’t be able to
make that decision until a couple of weeks before hand. We always have a
couple of weeks with blackberries ONLY before the blueberries get ripe - about
mid-June. I have been working on the entertainment that we plan to have on
Saturdays during berry season. You can go to our web site – www.TxBerry.com and
click on the button that reads “Calendar” to keep up with everything that we
are planning.
June 14th will be
our first big day. I would imagine that the first of the blueberries can be
picked that day. Since this is the Saturday before Father’s Day, we have
decided to call this “family day”. We have booked a wonderful petting zoo and
pony rides for that day. The children should have a great time petting the
animals. Pet food will be available for a nominal charge if your child would
like to feed the little animals. Be sure to bring your camera with you. We
have also booked a couple of the big blow- up bouncers to help entertain the
little ones.
June 21st is our
western day. Lanny Joe will be here telling stories and singing this summer
like he did last summer. Once again, we have a chuck wagon coming to serve
breakfast. Hopefully we won’t be rained out this year. Alan and Diane
Thompson are coming all the way from Amarillo to serve a breakfast of sausage,
eggs, blueberry pancakes and coffee. They will join Lanny Joe as part of the
entertainment. The charge is $10 for advance tickets and $12 if you wait until
you get here to get your tickets. There won’t be any charge for any little one
4 years old and younger.

June 28 is our educational
day. We have people coming to lead seminars on a number of different things –
everything from attracting birds to your yard to the Battle of Little Big
Horn. All of these programs are for the young, as well as, the young at heart.
July 5th is our 3rd annual Red, White and Blueberry Festival benefiting our Sadler Volunteer Fire Department.
You have all been so generous the past two years and I know that you will
happily support them again this year.
We will have food on
Saturdays. Right now, I can’t tell you exactly what it will be. I do know
that blueberry lemonade will be available each day – everybody loved that last
summer. We will, also, have ice cream for the first time. I am working on the
vendors for this summer. If you or someone that you know would like to be here
just let me know.
The berries will still be $12
per level bucket and we will still be open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
Saturday and Sunday each week. We are changing the hours to benefit everyone.
One of the suggestions that came in last year was for us to open later one
morning a week so that the young mothers and their children could get here in
time to find a few blackberries. We thought and thought about it and couldn’t
find a way to change just one day a week. Instead we decided to change every
day and to try to let everyone know beginning now. We are going to open at 8
a.m. and close at 3 p.m. This also will help Pearce and me get a little more rest.
The Berry Patch is still for
sale. We have listed it with Brian Smith, Director of
the Farm & Ranch Division of Ellen Terry Realtors, a Dallas broker.
Brian’s office phone number is (972) 588-8300 and his Message Center phone number is (972) 380-3319.
Brian's E-mail address is brian@countryconnection.com
His website URL is www.countryconnection.com.

The Patch is growing so fast and really needs people a little younger
than Pearce and me to keep it going. The potential here is amazing and needs
to have someone with a good imagination and a love for nature.
We are looking forward to seeing
all of you this summer. Be sure to let all of your friends know about us. By
the way, I am already booking groups – so if you would like to bring a brownie
troop or a senior citizens organization, just let me know.
I have been looking for new
recipes to send out to all of you this year. Here are two that are really good
and I hope will get you craving fresh blueberries. Enjoy these two cakes – the
Nova Scotia Blueberry Cream Cake and/or the Blueberry Crumb Cake. Click HERE for this month's Recipes.
It won’t be long now before
those berries are ready – just about 2 ½ months.
See you soon.
