Berry Log - Day One

We survived! We had people lining up and down the streets and taking over Sadler, pounding down the door to pick berries! Ok, maybe it wasn't quite that dramatic. But we did walk out the door to see people ready to go before our scheduled opening time. We understand the excitement. After a couple of hours of heaping buckets of the biggest, juiciest blackberries you'd ever seen had been picked and some very happy pickers had all they could carry, we had to send people away because all the ripe berries had been picked. DO NOT confuse this with us being out of berries. We have loads and loads of berries!! Plenty to get us through the summer. They're just taking awhile to ripen. Have no fear! We will keep you updated!

New Friends on Opening Day

We couldn't have made it through the day without the amazing help and knowledge of our staff working with us this summer and Ann and Pearce Bailey's continued help and support!

I Think I Can, I Think I Can

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Or turtle and rabbit if you prefer. Well, think of those ripening berries as the tortoise. They are not operating on our time schedule. Hmmm…maybe they need a good talking to. Or maybe they're like a fine wine or cheese and being aged to perfection. Actually, we're quite sure there is a scientific reason why the berries are taking their oh so sweet time to ripen that has to do with a long winter and a cool spring. You see, the berries become ripe when it's hot (that's the extent of our science lesson for the day). And granted it's pretty hot out there right now, but the berries have trust issues and want to make sure the heat is gonna stick around and make it worth their while to become the lovely, beautiful ripe berries we know they can be. They're just a little shy.

Does anyone else have a strong desire to read 'The Little Engine That Could'? Please excuse me for a moment while I go give a motivational speech to the berries…

Best Intentions

Our goal is to make your visit to the Berry Patch a worthwhile trip. We know it's quite a drive for some of you (Hi. Remember me? Jeannie's sister who drives in from North Dallas?) We know it can be a little disappointing to make the drive and then not find any ripe berries to pick (I explained this frustration to the berries and pleaded for their help). We're keeping a close eye on both the blackberries and blueberries and the bushes are loaded, I mean more-berries-than-the-Bailey's-have-ever-seen loaded. There are some bushes that have so many berries on them that will all ripen at the same time and you'll only have to visit one bush to get a whole gallon. Right now though we just have a small portion of the berries that got the message we were opening this week and were ready. Then there are some that are on the verge of being ripe, like hours from being ready to pick. You want to talk about self-control? Try not picking those almost-but-not-quite-ready berries!

Some of our Shy Blackberries

So with all that being said, If you plan to come out mid-morning or later to pick a lot of berries, please call us at 903.564.6228, check our facebook page, or check our website. If we are out of ripe berries for the day, we will let you know any way possible! There may also be an increase in carrier pigeons and smoke signals in the area.

Mark Your Calendars

Are you trying to figure out a day to visit the farm? Afraid you might be bored and have no one to entertain you except berries that don't respond when you try to talk to them? (If they do respond, please hydrate yourself as you are getting delirious and dehydrated). We have the day and place for you! Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 19th!! This is Father's day weekend and will be a great family day at the Berry Patch with our friend, Lanny Jo Burnett, cowboy poet extraordinaire! As well as a bounce house, face-painting, and some precious miniature donkeys! Our lovely friends on the U-Pick Trail at Lavender Ridge Farms (try the honey lavender chicken salad…yum!!) and Red River Peach Orchard (homemade peach ice cream…hello?) will have some fun things going on as well that day!

If you can't make it out on the 19th, don't worry. You can check out our events page for some more fun stuff we have scheduled on June 26th and July 3rd!
