Honeymooners
I think the honeymoon is over and the hard work has just begun (ha! as if we've been sitting around twiddling our thumbs). What a wonderful first week we had. And the second week started out with a bang! Last week was lovely rainbows and butterflies and sweet compliments. This week as been a little more backbreaking, but in a good way. A very i-can't-believe-i'm-doing-this-in-hundred-degree-weather kind of way. This is just the beginning. But seriously, thank heaven for good coffee to get me started, cherry butter to fill my tummy, and blueberry lemonade to cool me off in the afternoon (and by afternoon I mean about 10am. I think that's as long as I've been able to go without so far). Can I get an amen!?
Patience is a Virtue
….Or so we've been taught. However, practicing patience is not a favorite pastime. I do want you to know that I believe some of the berries took the motivational speech to heart last week and have done their duty. There are still some rebellious berries out there, but they're coming along. We promise! Blueberries are still needing about another week to ripen. We've been finding some ripe ones here and there and will sound the alarms loud and clear when they are ready for the picking.
P.S. We can't wait either!
Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!
We've been informed, and learned ourselves, that if you're digging around in the blackberry bushes there are chiggers. These are just one brand of pests that enjoy our 15 precious acres of berry bliss. We know (oh we know!) the bugs, especially the chiggers, are a little pesky. It's just part of life outside the city. We encourage you to be prepared and hose yourself down with insect repellent and sulfur powder. While we certainly won't miss any chiggers you take home with you, it's just an unpleasant experience we don't want to send anyone home with!
Coffee!!! And Such.
We've been a little slow going with having some concessions available for our guests because, well…because this is a whole new world for the us! Also, it's really hard to think of wanting anything else once you've had blueberry lemonade! So, finally we made into town to scope out some yumminess that we could provide during your visits. We will slowly be building our menu. We started this week with some coffee (hooray!) and frozen treats. We're working on having sandwiches and some other snacks in the near future. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
I'm not sure where all these space references are coming from, or what they have to do with a berry patch, but i'm sure there's a reasonable link somewhere. If you dig. Really really deep.
Summer Salad Recipe
Here's a twist on a salad for you to try out. It had us at blackberries!
Blackberry Endive Salad
Drop a few blackberries in the bottom of a salad bowl and lightly mash with a fork to release the juices. Scatter in some sliced endive. Stir in ripe, chopped avocado. Grate in some Pecorino cheese (an aged sheep's milk cheese and a switch from your usual Parmesan). Add a bit of orange zest. Drizzle in a high quality extra virgin olive oil and good balsamic vinegar. Season with sea salt and freshly ground pepper, toss, and you have a salad that will wake up your palate with fresh summer flavors.
